The Pre-Vacation Rituals That Make Traveling Feel Effortless
Written By: Senior Travel Advisor, Payton Rudolph
I used to think the best part of a vacation was the destination—but over time, I’ve learned that how I prepare makes just as much of a difference. A few intentional rituals before I leave help my trips feel calmer, more organized, and honestly… more enjoyable.
Here’s what I always do before heading out of town.
I start my packing list at least a week early 📝
The second a trip is booked, I open a packing list. I don’t pack yet - I just add things as they come to mind throughout the week. Sunglasses, chargers, comfy shoes, that one jacket I always forget.
By the time it’s time to pack, the list is done and my brain is relaxed. No last-minute panic, no forgotten essentials.
I make sticky notes for each day 📅
This might sound extra, but it works. I write one sticky note per day with the main activity, the overall vibe (walking day, beach day, travel day), and the weather forecast.
Seeing the trip laid out visually helps me pack realistically instead of throwing in random “just in case” outfits.
I plan outfits based on activities and weather 👕
Once I know what each day looks like, I lay out outfits that match. Comfortable shoes for long walking days, layers for cooler evenings, easy looks for travel days.
It saves decision fatigue while I’m away and I actually wear everything I pack.
I clean out the fridge the night before leaving 🧼
I do a quick fridge reset: toss leftovers, check expiration dates, and wipe things down if needed. Coming home to a clean fridge instead of mystery smells is elite post-vacation energy.
I prep an easy freezer meal for when I return 🍕
After travel, I never want to think about dinner. Having something easy (like a frozen pizza) waiting for me makes the transition home so much smoother.
If I have a later flight, I change the sheets 🛏️
This is my favorite ritual. Slipping into fresh sheets after a long travel day feels like the ultimate welcome-home gift to myself.
Why it matters ✨
These little habits take minimal effort, but they remove so much stress. They let me enjoy the excitement before the trip and the comfort after it… without feeling overwhelmed.
