Dreaming of a vacation that includes the vineyards of Tuscany, the streets of Paris, and a river cruise through the Rhine, all in one unforgettable journey? Multi-destination travel is one of the best ways to experience more of the world with just one flight, but it also comes with layers of complexity that can quickly feel overwhelming.

I Start with Who will be Traveling

As I begin with a client looking to create a multi-destination trip, I start with the “who”. Who is going directly impacts the plan for the itinerary. A family trip may call for fewer hotel changes and more downtime, while an adventure-focused couple might prefer a fast-paced itinerary filled with new experiences every few days. If grandparents are coming, public transit may not fit into the plan as easily as if you have a younger family traveling and we need to build in more time and money to move around. Starting with who will be traveling helps me to make the best recommendations for a successful vacation

Next, I Choose a Logical Route

Mapping your destinations in a logical order saves both time and energy. I work hard to avoid backtracking or long, unnecessary transfers whenever possible. I can help you design an itinerary that flows naturally whether that’s north to south through Italy, west to east across Japan, or city-to-countryside through France and Switzerland.

Flights play a key role as well. Sometimes starting or ending your trip in a secondary airport can save hours of travel time and even reduce costs. When I begin the planning process I always ask about dates and flexibility and start with flights. I like to have a nonstop flight coming home whenever possible, so if routing the trip one way allows for the nonstop I start there. Cost also plays into it as we look at flights and availability. This is where a professional comes in clutch – I play with the variables to present the best option for you that matches your wish list and budget.

For Most Travelers, It's Important to Balance Sightseeing with Rest

The temptation to pack it all in can often times lead to a stressful vacation. Sometimes the better option is to make the one trip you’re considering into 2 or even 3 trips so you have several incredible experiences instead of one overwhelming and exhausting experience. I also always recommend nothing too crazy on your arrival day. Even if you have the luxury of flying business class, the time change for traveling outside the country is significant and

most people struggle on the afternoon of day 1. Taking it easy on arrival is a key way to start the trip on the right fit.

I’m a firm believer that the best multi-destination trips leave room for relaxation and spontaneity. I often recommend alternating high-energy days (like a city or site tour) with slower-paced stops. This balance keeps everyone refreshed and excited for what’s next.

I Always Recommend Clients Streamline Transportation

Efficient transfers are key to avoiding travel fatigue.

  • Trains are often ideal within Europe for comfort and scenic views.

  • Private drivers or guides can turn travel days into experiences, especially in destinations like South Africa or New Zealand.

  • River and ocean cruises offer a fantastic way to explore multiple destinations without unpacking more than once.

When your travel connections are thoughtfully arranged, getting from place to place feels effortless, not exhausting.

Stay in the City Center

I also recommend that we spend a little more to stay in the city center. Not only will you save time and money on transfers/taxis/public transportation, you will be closer to the action. For instance, in Rome I always recommend hotels near the Trevi Fountain and Spanish steps. There are many great dining and gelato places that are walkable from most hotels making it easy to be flexible while you travel and make the most of your time.

Pack Smart and Stay Organized

Packing light becomes essential when you’re moving between destinations. Focus on versatile pieces that can mix and match, and remember that laundry services are often available mid-trip.

Digital tools can help too. I provide all my clients with access to a travel app that has all their confirmations at the touch of a button. It details their day-by-day itinerary including flight, hotel, and tour details all in one place.

Work with a Professional Travel Advisor

This is where having a trusted travel advisor makes all the difference. From coordinating flight schedules and rail passes to choosing the right hotels in each city, I will handle the countless details behind the scenes so you can simply enjoy your vacation.

Many of my clients tell me their multi-destination trips were their most memorable ever, precisely because everything felt seamless, not stressful. I know for my family, we all enjoy our times traveling together and having a plan for success makes it easy for us to explore together.

A multi-destination vacation is a chance to experience the best of many worlds. With thoughtful planning, the right pacing, and expert guidance, your trip can flow like a perfectly composed story from start to finish.
