What a Week in Mexico Taught Us About Travel in the Mexican Caribbean
When many travelers think of Mexico, they picture massive all-inclusive properties with crowded pools and high energy. After ten of our travel advisors spent a week touring some of the Mexican Caribbean’s most talked about resorts, one thing became very clear:
Mexico offers far more variety, sophistication and hospitality than many travelers realize.
This recent Be Our Guest Travel Company trip gave us the opportunity to experience multiple resorts firsthand, compare hotels side-by-side, and learn exactly which types of travelers fit each property best. Here are some of the biggest takeaways that will help us tailor our Mexico recommendations moving forward.
The Service in Mexico Truly Stands Out
Across nearly every resort we visited, the warmth, attentiveness, and genuine hospitality stood out immediately. From wait staff catering to every need and to housekeeping going above and beyond with thoughtful touches, the level of service consistently exceeded expectations.
For clients who may feel hesitant about Mexico compared to other Caribbean destinations, this is one of the strongest selling points. The hospitality culture here creates an experience that feels incredibly welcoming and personalized.
Mexico Is Not “One Type” of Vacation
One of the biggest misconceptions about Mexico is that every resort feels the same. In reality, the properties we toured could not have been more different from one another.
Some resorts leaned ultra-modern and minimalist, while others felt lush, tropical, and deeply connected to nature. A few felt lively and social, while others prioritized quiet luxury and wellness.
That means matching the right traveler to the right resort matters more than ever. When you work with a Be Our Guest Travel Company advisor, we always start with a “Get To Know You Call” so that we can match your resort wishlist to the personality of a resort.
For example, a traveler who loves sleek, contemporary design may gravitate toward the refined aesthetic of The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai, while someone wanting a more tropical, authentic Mexico feel may prefer Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya. Wellness-focused travelers may fall in love with the eco-luxury atmosphere at Alila Mayakoba.
Why Preferred Club at Secrets is Worth It
After comparing standard accommodations to upgraded experiences at Secrets properties, one thing became obvious: Preferred Club is not simply a nice extra.
The added amenities, upgraded locations, exclusive lounges, elevated service touches, and overall enhanced experience create a noticeable difference. For clients considering a Secrets stay, we’ll almost always recommend pricing Preferred Club from the start rather than treating it as an optional splurge later.
The Resorts That Surprised Us Most
Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya
This was one of the biggest surprises of the trip for many advisors. While it may not always dominate social media conversations the way some newer luxury brands do, the resort delivered in several important categories: a beautiful beach, consistently strong food, lush tropical grounds, and a more authentic Mexico atmosphere. It also offers flexibility across price points, making it easier to recommend to a wider variety of travelers.
Fairmont Mayakoba
Among the Mayakoba resorts we visited, Fairmont stood out for one major reason: the beach. Because it was the first resort built within the Mayakoba complex, it secured one of the strongest beachfront locations in the area — and it shows. For travelers prioritizing swimmable beach space in Mayakoba, this property deserves serious consideration.
NIZUC Resort & Spa
NIZUC is currently navigating nearby construction, which is important to disclose honestly to clients. However, there are still several strengths that make the property compelling: two beaches that are often less affected by sargassum, a secluded atmosphere, and long-term value thanks to future shared privileges with the neighboring property once completed. This is a resort with strong future potential, especially once the construction next door is finished.
How We Can Help
This trip reinforced something we already believed: Mexico is one of the most diverse travel destinations in the Caribbean region.
Whether a traveler wants eco-luxury, wellness, modern design, social energy, romance, family-friendly elegance, or authentic tropical charm, there truly is a resort that fits.
Because the best Mexico recommendation isn’t simply about stars, price points, or trends. It’s about understanding you as a traveler first and then matching you to the property that feels tailor-made.
